Wes Horton is the newest member of Grasstime! But a seasoned upright bass player that is well known in picking circles from coast to coast. He masterfully holds down the doghouse, driving that upright bass. Always adding that edgy and hard driving bluegrass tone to help round out the Grasstime sound. Wes substituted numerous dates for the band in 2020 and we’re thrilled to announce that he joined the band full time late 2021!
Wes was born in Dallas TX, Wes comes from a very musical family. Grandad, dad, mother, aunts and uncles and cousins everybody playing and singing Gospel, Bluegrass, Country, and Western Swing. Wes started playing guitar at 10 years old, and not long after Bass guitar piqued his interest. Upright bass was a curious oversized instrument, maybe too big for him at the time, but he never took his eye off the upright. Wes went on to play guitar and joined with friends and cousins to form a band and later learned to play drums and bass guitar. Wes played drums in several bands during his teenage years but the quest for upright came to be, when a family upright was handed down. Learning the Upright Bass begins!
Wes played Bass and guitar in a touring Gospel group for several years during his 20's. Wes moved to the Nashville in 1998 with a job relocation and continued to play at his church and soon connected with pickers and started played events. The upright bass later became his passion and he plaid with numerous local bluegrass bands over the years. Wes owns 6 upright basses and is a business partner in Nashville Travel Bass. Wes says.. “my love of making music with others and adding a complimenting rhythm and tone is a satisfying creative outlet for me, And, I guess I am biased, but I think music is a lot more appealing when a tasteful bass line is backing the other players!”
